Giant Vegetable Weigh-Off

Home of the Giant Butternut Squash World Record!

As a certified weigh site for The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC), the State Fair of Virginia hosts an annual Giant Pumpkin & Veggie Weigh-Off on the opening Saturday of fair at noon. GPC is an international competition of giant growers with categories for giant atlantic great pumpkins, watermelons, squashes, field pumpkins, long gourds, bushel gourds and tomatoes.

Following the Saturday weigh-off, be sure to visit the giants on display in the horticulture pavilion, presented by E.J. Wade Construction and Carter Cat!

2023 Weigh Off Champions

The 2023 State Fair of Virginia GPC Weigh-Off Grand Champions are as follows:

  • Giant Pumpkin – Ryan Cook, Jumping Branch, WV, 1,009 lbs.
  • Giant Watermelon – Hank Houston, Spotsylvania, 224.2 lbs.
  • Squash – Paul Jarosh, Culpeper, 911.6 lbs. – State Fair Record
  • Long Gourd – Hank Houston, Spotsylvania, 126.5 inches long – State Fair Record
  • Bushel Gourd – Paul Jarosh, Culpeper, 102 lbs.
  • Field Pumpkin – Ryan Cook, Jumping Branch, WV, 55.2 lbs.
  • Tomato – Paul Jarosh, Culpeper, 3.34 lbs.

  • Butternut Squash (not GPC) – Jason Loris, 131.4 lbs. – Guiness World Record
